Wind power
Your expert for frictional connections
TAS SCHÄFER GmbH is a leading supplier of high-precision frictional connections and coupling systems for industrial applications. With decades of experience and technological expertise, the company develops customised solutions for various industries, including wind energy, mechanical engineering and heavy industry.
A reliable connection
The wind industry is increasingly relying on innovative connecting elements such as shrink discs and flange couplings to increase the efficiency and reliability of wind turbines. These technologies play a crucial role in the safe transmission of torque and axial forces between the various components of a wind turbine.

Shrink discs in the wind industry
Shrink discs provide a backlash-free and force-locked connection between the rotor shaft and the gearbox or generator. Their high transmission capacity and ability to withstand high mechanical loads make them ideal for use in wind turbines. The easy assembly and disassembly reduces maintenance costs and increases the availability of the systems. Hydraulic shrink discs can be used as an alternative to the mechanical shrink discs. The greatest advantage of the hydraulic TAS-SHS shrink disc is the enormous time saved during mounting. Large shrink discs, such as those used in wind turbines, are tensioned in just a few minutes. This is in contrast to the several hours of assembly time required for a mechanical shrink disc. In addition, this system can be tensioned with as little as 120 bar to 200 bar, thus significantly reducing assembly times.
Flange couplings in wind power
Flange couplings are used to connect two shaft sections securely. They are known for their robustness and ability to minimise vibrations, which results in improved smooth running of the wind turbine. Flange couplings also make installation and maintenance easier, which optimises operating times.
Benefits and applications
High reliability
Both connection technologies offer high operational reliability and are able to withstand extreme environmental conditions.
Easy of maintenance
The easy handling and reusability of shrink discs and flange couplings reduce maintenance costs.
Efficient torque transmission
The precise transmission of torque and axial forces increases the efficiency of wind turbines.
Fast assembly
The hydraulic shrink disc allows for quick assembly and disassembly.
Frequently asked questions
How does a shrink disc work?
A shrink disc is a mechanical device used to create a frictional connection between a shaft and a hub. It generates a high contact force when the bolts are tightened, thus ensuring a backlash-free connection. A shrink disc works by using conical surfaces. When the screws are tightened, the outer ring of the shrink disc is pressed against the inner ring, causing the conical surfaces to slide into each other and create pressure on the shaft-hub connection. This results in a force-locked or friction-locked connection.
How do you choose the right shrink disc?
The selection of the right shrink disc depends on various factors:
Torque: The torque to be transmitted is one of the most important factors.
Shaft and hub diameter: The shrink disc must match the diameters of the shaft and the hub.
Environmental conditions: Temperature, humidity and other environmental conditions must be taken into account.
Materials and coatings: Depending on the application, certain materials or surface coatings may be required to ensure adequate corrosion protection.
What tolerances and surface finishes are recommended for the use of shrink discs?
For the tolerances of the shaft and hub, we recommend a fit pairing between H6/h6 and H7/g6, depending on the diameter. The recommended surface roughness lies between Rz 10 and Rz 25, depending on the diameter. Exact details can be found in the catalogue. Deviations are possible by agreement.
